Your first stop in McLaren Vale must be the McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Coast Visitor Centre, a great place to plan your visit, with the local specialists offering great tips on where to go, must do’s and sharing what the locals love. But while you are there, enjoy a coffee and cake in their café, a wine tasting in the cellar door or purchase the perfect local gift for someone special.

McLaren Vale is one of South Australia’s most loved wine regions, boasting more than 80 cellar doors, most of which offer spectacular views across the vineyard valley. But there is more to the region than wine, there’s a vast array of craft breweries and distilleries who also call McLaren Vale home. Looking for a little inspiration, the brewery trail is certainly a must do, but the combined brewery and spirit trail is also a hit with visitors (that’s the one and only local tip in this little read, for more you will have to call into the Visitor Centre).

McLaren Vale main street is a bustling village and a great place to wander. You’ll be rewarded with an array of small boutiques, art galleries, treat yourself to a massage or peruse the homewares and garden centres. Enjoy the magnificent green lawns of historic Hardy’s Tintara Winery or South Australia’s iconic chocolate shop Robern Menz. There are also lots of restaurants, cafes and hidden gems to enjoy for breakfast, lunch and dinner too!

Adjacent the main street is where you will find the green spaces in town. There are plenty of parks and other spots to take time out and relax. Ellis Park is one enjoyed by the locals and the kids can run free in Gemmel Tassie Park which is home to a huge army tank, playground, skate park and BMX Track.

If you are a keen cyclist, you are in luck. The Shiraz Trail takes you from McLaren Vale to the lovely village of Willunga, where you will encounter many gems to stop at along the way!
